A singer-songwriter called Lucky Fonz III once wrote the Dutch version of these words:

Here lies a man
that does not know
how to make honey
from a flower in the field,
the beam of a sun
and some water*

I happen to think these lyrics are extremely beautiful. They fill me with very real grief for someone I never knew, for men that don't know how to make honey in general, and specifically for those who do not learn it before they perish. At the same time I find such joy in hearing and singing these words – the imagery is so lovely, so modestly vivid – they actually lift my spirit until I feel a full and radiant inner smile coming through the sadness.

Why is it that beauty and sadness seem to go so well together?

A bright nine-year-old girl once told me why I could speak English and she couldn't: 'Because your eyes are blue and mine are dark!'
The world of hate and pain and exclusion that came up with that remark made my heart cramp and shrink into my chest. Tears stung hard at the back of my eyeballs as I smiled, told her she was wrong, and spend the next half hour on an improvised English class. A class that turned hilarious as we stumbled upon some very funny phonetic issues, and which left her, at least, with a new sense of self-confidence towards learning English.
