I used to read a lot of H.P. Lovecraft, horror-writer avant la lettre. He was probably the first writer to identify something like primordial fear, introducing a horror that outdates mankind. Chtulhu, elder daemon, a spawn, which in itself sounds unnatural: spawned. One thing about these daemons was that they were otherworldly, and it was completely unclear what they existed of. Be it plant-life, reptilian, mineral based, they were scary as hell and have taken their rightful place in popular culture. Lovecraft brought them in existence for us. But sometimes I wonder what inspired him. I found an image of tubeworms in a newspaper once, and I saved the clipping in one of my notebooks. Tubeworms supposedly date back millions of years, and have hardly changed genetically. Some resemble flowers, while others are ethereal, ghostlike. Now I’m going out on a limb here, but the same beauty that these tubeworms hold can be seen in the vase of flowers you have in your living room. My guess is that it took someone with the exceptional ability to see the monstrous potential that underlies the beauty of a flower, someone like Lovecraft, to write stories about lurking horrors.
