At the exact moment the acid hit, he was moving down the strip, trying to make it home. These things work better when you’re in a safe environment. He put down his right foot and realized that the world was different from when he’d lifted it up in the air. Everything was at once close by and far away, and sound reached him as if it’d been squeezed through a rubber hose that had been taped stuck to his ears. And the air was humid, making him feel like he was sweating profusely, but he could feel his skin was dry though it did seem rubberlike. All of a sudden the world jumped up and got on his back, and he found that the sidewalk had attached itself to him. When he looked forward he found there were palm trees swaying before him, dancing sideways, lurching sickeningly in an impeccably blue sky. He gasped and tried to push himself free from the warm concrete, but the palm tree right in front of him sprouted mirror images of itself that moved counter-clockwise to one another slowly. “That”, he thought, “is actually quite impressive.” He closed his eyes and the palm tree multiplied endlessly behind his eyelids.
