I am a reader. Just like some people fish, and others do needlework, I read. There was a time when I was proud of that, and I placed my finished books on shelves like a hunter would hang his trophies on the wall. Over the years I’ve come to see that for what it really is: showing off. Having a large bookcase is, like walking around with your penis exposed, a somewhat silly thing for which you have no credit at all to take. You didn’t make the penis, you didn’t write the books. They just happen to be in your possession.
And though everybody knows that, we all like to see a big bookcase, because somehow it’s been imprinted in us that lots of books = wisdom = virtue = good. This may date back to the time when the only ones to read books were clergymen, pious people, I’m hypothesizing here. Fact is that books have an uncommonly high ‘stuff white people like’-factor. The only things to come even remotely close are Danish design furniture and wooden floors. These too, I’m sorry to say, are essentially the same silly thing as a bookcase. But still, they have an almost pornographic quality, like these huge classic libraries.
