I used the two halves of an empty coconut to make a horse come by on the other side of the river, and lo and behold, our sweet two-and-half-year-old fell for it.

Don't know that particular trick?

Get a hold of Monty Python and the Holy Grail – that's where I got it from anyway, and it should give you some pretty good laughs at least ('what's your favourite colour?' hahaha, to think of only that sentence; really, go see it).

This garden fun actually inspired a conversation in which it was made clear to me that my sense of humour has regressed. Where I once enjoyed Monty Python now Two and a Half Men makes me laugh...

The question that arose was this one: has my sense of humour really regressed, or was it always shallow and was my outspoken preference for the old English humorists merely a means to project some kind of self-image in my twenties?

Looking at this photograph I fear the latter is the case, because all I can think of is those three little yellow thingies (what are they anyway? Unopened parasols? Beach seat cushions?) at the bottom centre.

They remind me of the Sinas Split. An ice lolly from my childhood. Orange Split, I guess, in English: vanilla ice cream covered in a layer of frozen orange juice – whooopeeee – I scream you scream we all scream for I scream (no matter how much lingerie, perky red lips and flaming breasts Magnum throws at us, ice cream was, is and forever will be linked up with childhood, ugh!).

Three little ice lollies walking onto a hot beach...
I mean...
You see...
Really, by any standard...
Such a bad idea...

I hereby truly and deeply apologize for my sense of humour.

But this photograph really, really makes me smile, yes, laugh even.
