This is not my language, actually. I’m borrowing it for a moment to try and explain this to you, this suspense. My mind wanders off to old comics and dime store novels: tales of wonderment and suspense, horrid accounts of lustful crimes and general debauchery. Stuff like that, general pulp fiction more or less.

I don’t feel like throwing the dictionary at you about this, but I think suspense would translate as something like: the expectation that something will happen without knowing what or when. My guess is that it’s derived from suspended, which would be something like caught or frozen in a moment. That sounds appropriate, doesn’t it? A reader, drawn into a story, caught waiting for something to happen.

This is that same moment in a different metaphor. One moment, caught in a photograph, which leaves the viewer wondering how this moment will unfold. He shoots, he scores? Or will this be an epic fail. At this moment everything is possible.
