The story I’m about to tell you in most cases turns out to be a dream. But I promise, this wasn’t like that at all. This story is more like a subtle shift, a slight nudge if you will, from normalcy into wonderment. That might sound pretentious, I know, but I’m not trying to remake myself as a painter of miracles or something like that. Rather, you can imagine me as an eye on which an image fell, nothing less, nothing more.
This particular day it was uncommonly hot. I was walking to my office, sweating profusely and cursing the fierce headache that I’d woken up with. I looked up at the sky to see if a merciful, cooling storm was coming, but the only thing I could see were small ineffectual clouds that seemed frozen there from lack of wind. I’d forgotten my sunglasses and had to squint from the harsh light. Then, in a building across the street, I was struck by the image of a temple reflected in the mirror glass. But when I turned around to where the source of the image should be, it turned out to be an uninspired grey office building. The sun’s glare, bouncing off the buildings made me squint harder, forced me to look through my eyelashes. And for a moment I thought I saw Jesus, crucified on Calvary, in the reflection of the building. But again I’d been deceived by my own eyes: Jesus was just a cross on a steeple. And maybe I was a fool for looking for signs and images on an ungodly day of stink and heat, but still the building unnerved me with its ability to conjure up the past like that. I took a side street to get to my office, and I’ve never been down that street ever since for fear of seeing my own ancient past reflected.
