‘In gods we trust, others must pay cash’. I ask the man in the souvenir shop if the plural in the sign is a mistake. It isn’t, he assures me. He gets all kinds of customers, each with their own god, and as a humble shopkeeper he doesn’t want to offend anyone.
It makes me think of the Romans and how they welcomed each local deity as just another manifestation of their pantheon of gods and goddesses. To me, that sounds like a practical solution to what might otherwise have been a great problem, and it’s just that kind of practical thinking that speaks from the sign in the store.
I ask the owner what he believes in. He shrugs. And that’s probably the right answer; it just isn’t important. In a store you sell, and at home you believe, a rather pragmatic way of dealing with religion.
I pick up a plastic statue of a naked man with a beard and a Greek style helmet. I figure it’s Mars, or Ares. I buy it as a souvenir and slowly make my way to the Coliseum to watch the re-enactment of the gladiator games.
