the tenement buildings stand on the sidewalk and offer themselves up to passers-by, they draw up their blinds for the people to come and see their much abused innards.

their successors slowly muscle in on them, annexing courtyards and biting off parking lot-sized chunks of the no man’s land where unviable small-scale industries have been torn down.

municipal workers come and bulldoze the parks to replace them with more tenable lanes full of concrete flowerbeds. it’s beautiful, and they all go home at the end of the day feeling good about themselves.

more plans appear on the notice boards of the county district office, saying that people are welcome to join in the dialogue on the future of their neighbourhood. after all, it’s their home.

nobody comes to these meetings, but they put up invitations anyway. they call that participation. five minutes before closing an elderly man comes in and begins a lengthy monologue about virtue, and why his neighbours don’t possess it.

a radio from a window overhead plays a song that a computer has spewed out to replace the songs that people have bled for on rusting guitar strings, and it’s beautiful. they found a female vocalist who looks good on a bill-board and let her sing the chorus.

it goes
ooh, la-la-lah, i need a fix baby
cuz there ain’t no drug like you.

small patches of grass work their way through the pavement and carry a punch line.
