And this man comes up to me in the old part of the city and asks if I can name the Ten Commandments. I can’t, I realize. Maybe it’s lack of education or a disinterest on my part, but why even bother asking things like this? I mean, seriously, who’s still interested in religion anyway?
The man just smiles and shrugs, it’s not important. What is, though, is that he knows them by heart and would like a minute of my time to talk about it. Drawn hook, line and sinker. I say I’m not interested; I have to be somewhere else anyway and walk off in another direction. Soon I’m lost in a neighbourhood I’m not familiar with. Everyone I approach for directions shuffles off or walks on. I think of the man while walking; it seems people asking questions are not very welcome here. I wonder what it does to him to be ignored, if his faith bolsters him from this kind of rejection.
After retracing my steps I manage to find my way back to the main street. The man is standing there, smiling beatifically at the passers-by who give him a wide berth. I make my way home, his smile lingers like that of the Cheshire cat.
