Oscar Wilde once said something to the extent of not wanting to belong to any group that would have him. That thought sometimes pops up in my head when I leave my home for the office. I am part of a silent majority of blue-collar workers, a group that has never invited me in, but which I grew into. Just like, years ago, I grew into the punk scene. To my best knowledge, no one chooses to be a punk, a blue-collar worker, whatever, you just wake up one day and turn out to match the description.
A lot of people have tried to describe the essence of punk, and say that behind the being against things, there’s a longing for honesty, equality, a simpler, purer life. There’s a small group of elderly punks who probably still actively strive to bring this about. They mix seamlessly with the old socialists, Buddhists and hippies you meet on the streets, trying to make things better in their own way. Most of the other punks just grew out of it as they grew into other things like parenthood, work, something else to believe in. Still, punk never dies. It’s just waiting for a new generation that’s looking for a group that will have them.
