At first sight, seeing her between those leaves reminds me of an error I made back in the early eighties. In the back seat of the family car I dished out some story about an erotic island, where I should have said exotic island. There was no end to my parents' laughter.

Or at least, so it seemed, to me. In reality it probably subsided after 10 to 30 seconds or so. Meanwhile I had absolutely no clue as to what I had said that was so funny, or wrong. To this day I can remember that feeling of utter bewilderment, as if, by not being able to understand this one thing, by extend I must be totally incapable of really understanding anything going on in this world.

Thirty-somewhat years later, I still have that sometimes. When I hear an ambulance attendant has been assaulted while trying to get to someone, for example. Or when a train that is delayed because of a suicide causes people to curse that dead person for making them late. Stuff like that.

Then, I glance at her right hand, something striking, I look at her left hand, same thing. Do you see how this young woman touches those leaves? There is actually comfort in her gestures. Her right hand on top of my eight year old head, saying 'it's okay, it doesn't matter, you don't need to understand'. Her left hand resting on my all grown up shoulder, saying exactly the same thing...

By God, there is Christmas in those hands!
