It’s crowded tonight in the land of the lounge lizards. Christmas Eve and everyone’s trying to pick someone up, maybe not even to fuck, but just not to be alone. I sit at the bar nursing a longneck and try to find a conversation to slide into. Most of these tonight are about history, the ghost of Christmas past seems to lurk at the bottom of glasses as people tell about what their Christmases used to be like: warm of course and full of people that somehow aren’t around anymore. A pretty girl in a red metallic dress takes a seat at the bar. She orders a cocktail I’ve never heard of and can’t pronounce like it’s nothing new and stares at her fingernails which, I can see, are chipped. She catches me staring and sits upright, laying the better hand over the worse. “I thought I’d just pop in here for a quick drink before I head out to my party”, she says. I nod. There is no party and we both know it. “But if it’s nice here, I might stick around.” As the music channel switches to Mariah Carey, suddenly the electricity gives out. The lights are out on the main streets and the big Christmas tree in Jackson Square stops its 24/7 lightshow. The bartender puts candles on the bar and the tables and then pours cheap champagne. “Shame to let it get warm, people.” He gets a round of applause. The girl in the red metallic dress says that she thinks she’s going to stay here and what’s my name. We talk about Christmases long gone. Then someone starts to sing a carol and soon everyone joins in. “Feliz Navidad, feliz navidad, I want to wish you a merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart.”
