About every other day, of every week, of every month, of every year, I take our dog for a morning walk. Against the vets advise we make the same round every time. Well, actually there are two rounds: one going south into a field, and one going north into a field. Either way, just before spring really hits the land, you find dandelion flowers in those fields. And sure enough soon thereafter the dog cheerfully crashes through a field full of dandelion seed heads.

You know these flowers. You can pick them and blow 'em out for good fortune, or so it is said. But since it is actually still winter just before spring, the dandelion seed heads occasionally freeze. More specifically, the dew, the dew on the perfect ball of of seeds freezes. Those most fragile of icicle micro stems - each and everyone of them a carrier of new flower life - bare an immensely strong resemblance to the fireworks in this picture.

I could say a million things about that comparison.
But I won't.
Just let me say this: If you ever get the chance to observe a frozen dandelion, take a closer look.
It's an immensely satisfying pass-time, I assure you.

So we leave 2014 with this image of a frozen micro-world, mirrored in explosions of light and fire.
I wish you all a beautiful new year.
May your health stay with you and your spirits keep their head up.
Everything else is much like the seeds of the dandelions...
