She comes home and puts a plastic bag on the table, making sure I see her do it. Having accomplished this – she checks to see if I look - she then proceeds to the hall to hang up her coat, walks back into the room and sits down next to me. She kisses me on the cheek and asks how my day was, to which I give a kind of non-committal shrug. When I ask how hers was she talks about everything but the bag now standing on the table. It was warm, she went out to see a friend and after she hopped into town for some shopping. We both look at the bag. “So, what did you buy”, I ask. “Just something small”, she says, so it must’ve cost a lot. She beams at me, saying: “You’ll love it.” I won’t. She tiptoes over and, like a magician doing a trick, pulls her purchase from the bag slowly. It turns out to be an ornamental owl, with small platters for eyes and large paws made from the kind of steel wire you find in concrete. The torso consists of glued-together wood. I take an instant dislike to the thing. “Well,” she asks, “what do you think?” I am trained in these situations and seemingly effortless I lie through my teeth that I think it will look lovely with all the other statuettes she already has. With equal skill she replies that she just knew I was going to love it. Then we smile at each other, professional peacekeepers.
