There is a pencil sketch saint above my desk who silently mouths salvation while I sit here prophesying doom on this keyboard. I hung it at precisely the right height for me to have to look up from my work to look at it. Usually I make half the effort and end up seeing its feet protrude from under its robe. My pencil sketch saint could’ve been a wizard, some kick ass elemental conjurer, but for those stupid toes sticking out. Everybody knows a wizard’s got more style than that. I don’t recall if I had an opinion on saints when I was a child; I consider myself to be more of a super hero kid. But when I look at that pencil sketch I mostly feel kind of sad. I know the toes are about humility, the symbolism of washing each other’s feet and all that, but it all seems out-dated. It makes me think of the kid with yesterday’s toy still telling everybody that it’s cool even though the world’s moved on. Now you can’t look a saint in the eye when you’re thinking things like that, can you? So he’ll just have to keep on silently mouthing salvation, while I think about toes and prophesy doom on this keyboard.
