A carnival, in Rio de Janeiro I presume (the photographer lives there), three beautiful women smile at the camera. Two of the women wear sequined garbs; maybe they’re dancers? The woman in the middle is glistening with sweat, dancing would cause that. I’m especially drawn to the woman on the right, though I find it hard to explain exactly why. Is it because in her simple white shirt she looks different from the others? Is it because men are supposedly attracted to women with red lips? Or is it that she just looks more natural, more herself?
It’s hard to unravel the mystery of a photograph. When I was a kid, I spent hours poring over the photographs of Ed van der Elsken, a Dutch photographer who portrayed people from all over the world. We had a book of his called Eye love you, lovingly dubbed a ‘people book’ by the photographer himself. I say lovingly, because van der Elsken had a most sincere curiosity about people that made it possible for him to get really close to them. The resulting photos were mesmerizing and raised questions just like this photo does. And that may just be the essence of good photography.
