“The citizens have been happy with your rule for so long they decide to build an addition to your palace.” I forget the exact words, but it was something more or less to that extent. I am, of course, quoting the original Civilization, a game by Sid Meier. For a lot of people like me, growing up with an Amiga or Atari, the first Civilization videogame was a revelation plain and simple. You were made leader of an empire and had the complete responsibility for its ecological, economical, cultural and military prowess. If your choices led to the wellbeing of your people, they would reward you by building a palace for you, bit by bit (you start off with a simple stone hovel).
Somehow, this photograph reminds me of all those former palaces my loyal subjects built me while I helped them towards the great space race victory. A palace is after all a thing of the past, that can only frown on this age of high-rise buildings and layers of government ruling countries from non-descript office blocks as close as possible to the roads in and out of towns.
