After my dad died there were a lot of things to take care of. The house had to be cleared out, accounts closed, his will executed. We spent days rifling through his stuff, sorting out his finances and dividing among us those few items that rung bells in our memories. At the end of the week we closed the door behind us, each carrying a cardboard box full of junk. The rest would go to the Salvation Army.
A week later I drive to a harbour along the great river where, according to the papers I snuck out of the house, my father kept a small motorboat, the Jack Sea. He never told us about it, but I can see he bought it six months after my mom died. It’s hard to explain why I didn’t tell my brothers, but I figure that just like my dad hid the existence of the boat from us, I want to keep this small part of him for myself.
The Jack Sea turns out to be a rust-bucket, a smeared bathtub with a ramshackle cabin built on top. I have to jump from ship to ship to reach it, anchored down as it is amidst other rickety boats. When I open the door to the cabin I see it’s empty except for a chair and hundreds of bottles, filled to a greater or lesser extent with water. All of them have dates written on them with a permanent marker. I open one of the bottles and taste the water, which appears to be sort of briny. Then I notice that the bottles stacked against the wall behind the chair are empty. From between the fold of the chair I see the marker stick out. And it dawns on me. I write the date on one of the empty bottles, screw the top of and I sit down and let my tears run into it.
