“They were lost in rock formations, or became park bench mutations. On the sidewalks and in the stations they were waiting…” Then the speech slurs as the power to the cassette player is cut off. The large cooling systems probably asked too much of the city’s erratic power supply again. The heat inside is stifling and I can feel sweat pouring from my head, streaming in rivulets past my neck and down my shirtfront. I open the door to my apartment and jam a chair against the doorknob to keep it from closing. The windows creak a loud protest, but I push them all the way up to allow the fresh air free passage. The only problem is, it doesn’t come. And there isn’t a sound to be heard, the whole city holding its breath, waiting for cold, for rain, for a flash flood or the second coming. Then someone swears loudly in the streets and wakes everything from its sleep. “Piece of shit, piece of fucking shit.” Together with many neighbours I rush to the window. We look out, at each other, all around us. Who was that swearing? Then we see below us a man on the roof of one of the other buildings. He stands right next to the edge and kicks at something hidden behind the ledge. In one fluent motion he lifts a cooling unit above his head and hurls it into the street. The cylinder of the ventilator looks almost like a sad doe-eye as the unit plummets to the ground. It lands on a parked car that squeals an electronic squeal and then dies. The man spits a large gob of phlegm at it, and retreats down the stairwell. My cassette recorder springs to life again, the singer sings. “But I got bored and left them there, they were just dead weight to me..”, I close the windows to keep the cold from the cooling unit in.
