There was a bear.
The bear loved hugging things, most of all trees (but also animals generally considered his prey).
A lumberjack came to the bear's hugging grounds.
He put his axe to a big old trunk.
For once the bear desired to kill.
But he couldn't.
So he hugged the lumberjack instead.
The lumberjack fled the scene and was never seen again in those parts.
The bear gave the wounded tree his longest hug ever.

This is the story in a children's book my three year old daughter was given recently, and of which this picture reminds me.

What rattles my chain about such stories is the ever present daily practice. For instance, what do the people who like, love and do not harm trees have to do, to get the people who make a living of bringing down rainforests to flee the scene?

What is our bear-hug?
I haven't got a clue.

It seems though, that my gift-giving friend caught on to something, presenting my daughter with this book. Yesterday, instead of tearing leaves from them, she hugged two trees.
