The photographer sends me a picture he made of a woman about to enter an exhibition by another photographer. I have to look up the photographer, William Eggleston, who turns out to be a chronicler of the southern United States. His photography seems random: everyday life, the open skies. He stands out for embracing colour photography in a time when art photography was all about black and white. When he was first exhibited in the Museum of Modern Arts in New York his work was severely criticized.
What does Eggleston have to do with this picture? Is there a connection between the two photographers? Or is this a random picture, much like Eggleston could have made, and is the connection between the photographers a coincidence?
I must be missing something, some intent on the photographer’s behalf. On second glance the poster on the left jumps out at me. The woman in the poster seems to be looking at me directly. Or is she looking at the photographer? “You can try your random picture all you want, but I’ve got my eye on you.” I don’t know, but I feel caught anyway.
