The clock that hung from the belfry was 3d-printed, just like everything else in the town. Rubber monks pulled on the plastic ropes with their rope-grain surfaces and the bell made a feeble, rather ineffective sound as it was rung. Flexible birds took flight and defecated on the lush green grassy knoll. Their faeces bounced off the surface and gradually, through a series of diminishing bounces, came to a halt. The blades of grass had all been pre-tested and the definite prints had undergone rigorous testing before being put to use. The rustle of the wind through the grass was almost undistinguishable from the real thing, a triumph of engineering. It was now possible for man to recreate his memories, but then what? Should those memories be relived, or altered in any way? Would that give people a means to linger in their pasts or reach some sort of closure? The tower stood, unaware of the part it was to play. Nor did it care overly; it was content just to be. From the far end of the field someone was looking at it. The tower shrugged, making the bell flop from left to right. Somewhere to its left a yellowish sun lit up coldly.
