And the city grows. Slowly but surely it approaches the mountains and its people start eating away at the rock walls, hacking at the stone for building blocks. Even mountains can be worn down and these will be in time.
The city also moves slowly to the sea and refuses to stop when it reaches the water. Piers are built, like so many tentacles, into the surf. And every day the fleet of small boats sails farther out to feed the mouths of so many inhabitants.
Sometimes houses will collapse or a sinkhole will open and swallow whole streets, cars and people sinking into the underground dirt rivers like brightly coloured toys. Within weeks construction crews will put up new buildings, and the new tenants will resemble the old ones.
There is no time for reminiscing, memories die with their owners and people exist shorter than they ever have before. History ceases to be relevant; the future is being constructed as we speak.
