So, two weeks ago I did not set out on a journey around the heart of Rio de Janeiro, imaginary or otherwise. I wrote about it though, because I felt that heart showed something of how our imagination can only go so far when it comes to describing all that we may encounter in reality.
I couldn’t stop thinking about a hike around that heart though. So I emailed a about my desires to our mutual friend the photographer. He then showed me (and it took him two explanations before my wise ass caught on) that the assumptions my imaginary journey was built on already didn’t match reality. That water is not the centre of Rio, it’s a heart in the southern parts of Rio. Hiking around it will not bring anyone in contact with that which Rio has to offer, just some of it. Beyond the hills lies much more Rio to explore. So with that the whole idea fell apart, the basis for the plan shattered, and I kind of felt like I got caught up by myself.

It would still be a wonderful trip though. After all, our hearts aren’t at the centre of us either, but they’re still pretty wonderful things.
