The buildings do not inspire anything other than the question whether this is our town. An apt association, since our town indeed does have a lot of such old buildings and is known for its towers. Wherever I see a big old tower is my home – that’s how we get through the land. Funny stuff. The statue however, that’s something else.

Is that a witch? ¬It’s a witch!
You think? Why would a witch be on a statue?
Because she’s funny. She has large, colourful feet.
No she doesn’t, look.
Yes she does, you can’t see her feet, but they’re large and full of colours. Her teeth too.

Suddenly I am very conscious of how I look by projecting what I know (in part at least; for instance, also just made a leap of thought that this might very well have been a witch burner). She just looks: all there is to see is the sole of one foot – the things might be purple with silver lining for all we know…

I wonder how often I have looked at a Photo of the Week with what I know in my head, instead of with my eyes. I wonder how often I do that in general. I wonder how many people do that as well. I wonder if it’s part of growing up (the more you know the less you see…). But I get tangled up in all these questions and this witch can’t fly so she’s a little boring and we go do something else. Meanwhile I make a promise to myself to be as conscious as possible about this moment.

Of course, it isn’t exactly a bad thing that my mind fills in the blanks based on what it can see and what it knows. But somehow that blank canvas way of looking and seeing, seems important; a space for imagination that’d better not got lost altogether.
