Someone stole the moon and hid it in plain sight. It was in a Halloween display in a pawnshop and no one paid any notice to it. They made it the magic stone in a wizard’s staff and next to it was a unicorn with its eyes set too close to each other, so the unicorn looked cross-eyed. Both eyes were however fixed squarely on the moon but people tend to not take cross-eyed unicorns seriously.
Of course, if you steal the moon, the cops are bound to take notice. And there they came snoop-snoop-snooping around the place. They lifted the hollow-eyed pumpkin up from the record player on which it was rotating, but the moon wasn’t there. And the owner hadn’t heard or seen a thing; he just sat in his chicken wire cubicle while they tore the place apart. All the witches on broomsticks dangling from fishing wire down off the ceiling shook their heads while the police rummaged through the inventory and, ultimately, left empty-handed. The owner turned the lights off, locked the door and went home. It was very dark outside, except for a faint light falling on the pavement from a wizard’s staff in a shop window.
