“Remember what you ate yesterday?”
The old man takes a seat on a barstool next to where I’m sitting. It takes me half a minute to remember it was spaghetti. That’s his cue.
“I remember everything.”
“Everything?”
“Everything.”
He pulls a photograph from his wallet and shows it to me. It’s an old picture, brownish, with a young couple on it in front of what I figure must be a train. They pose in front of their luggage.
“Of course I was a lot younger back then, but the thing is, I remember everything to the extent that I can tell you the number of tiles the platform was paved with. I recall her breath, the smell, but also the intervals with which she breathed, the small hairs on her upperlip and the slight breeze that picked up as we entered the train. I remember everything, every moment as if it were frozen and I myself frozen inside of it. I’m a ghost slipping through columns of ice. And tomorrow I will sit at this bar and there will be someone having a drink, just like you are. And I will be able to tell exactly how I used to go fishing in my dungarees by the small pond next to my grandmother’s house, and that I caught three fish and found one of them stuffed in my pocket two weeks later. But you know what?”
I take a sip of my beer and shrug.
“I can’t for the love of god remember what I ate yesterday.”
