The arena is empty, except for one man, still driving and striving as best as he can. The song pops into my head like it was made to be played here in this stadium that reduces men, turns them into mere dwarfs. What would it feel like to stand here under the lights in front of a full crowd and know that you’re nothing but a speck on this impeccable green field? The crowd will perform waves like they’re the roiling, turbulent surface of a great river and so honour the Maracanã river from which the stadium derives its name. The man standing there in the field won’t distinguish a single particular face, but instead faces a forest of limbs, moving, swaying. He may as well stand there alone for all this distance. And just then the game begins and the crowd goes wild.
