I think that the main reason we practice sports is that we gave up our nomadic lifestyle. Settling down brought with it a steady stream of food, give or take a drought or flooding. Turn the clock forward a few millennia or so, and we find ourselves running circles around our cities to work off the effect of this steady stream of food. As the production of food gets easier, the discrepancy between effort and reward grows. So maybe it’s industrialization that leads to running. Of course people have practiced sports throughout the ages, but those were usually focussed on skills used for fighting or hunting: essentially other means to procure food. So here we are in our offices and factories, trading our time for money, our money for food. And after that, we put on our running shoes and exchange our food for muscles that will wither in our offices. We live cyclical lives, like our ancestors before us. I see more and more people getting off the proverbial treadmill and returning to an agricultural lifestyle, another cycle of life. I expect that they don’t go out running in the evening.
