There are hills outside of town that consist entirely of waste. Great bulldozers with shovels like the mouths of dinosaurs take bites out of the smaller hills the garbage trucks leave and push the waste to the top of the hill. They cleverly create roads in the hillside to do so, a broad avenue of compressed junk that circles the hill to its summit.
After dark when the drivers have left, I patrol the premises with a Maglite and a pistol. Even though this is all junk that no one wants anymore, we don’t want people sneaking in and carting off things. Lately there’ve been complaints. Drivers climb the hill in the morning to find their roads ripped open, gaping holes dot the hillsides. And I know it wasn’t thievery, but I can’t explain that to my boss. I will be fired soon, I expect. All this junk vanishing is reflecting poorly on me. So now I just sit on top of one of the big bulldozers at night and drink beer. I shine my flashlight on these poor golems, these beings made from our refuse, as they stand up with difficulty and then walk ever more self-assured to the city in the distance.
