Who remembers Daniel Robitaille? During the North-American civil war this descendant of slaves, one of the first free black men, made a good life for himself in the shoe-business. Trotting about in high society circles, he believed himself beyond the reach of the rabid racism festering in those lands. However, marrying and impregnating a white woman did the trick. Hooded men came, took him from his home, cut of his hand and smeared him with honey. They shouted ‘candyman’ at him, over and over again, as they watched him get stung to death by bees. They then burned his corpse and scattered the ashes.
But Daniel did not die. His ghost lingered on, raising all kinds of hell when summoned. Should you desire to meet him, then repeat the word ‘candyman’ five times in front of any mirror you come across. Just a word of warning: it might be the last thing you ever do. It might, but the few who survived a summoning of Daniel Robitaille have left us with a detail that brings up his story in relation to this week’s photo. Apparently his rib cage does no longer contain lungs and a heart, but instead a swarm of bees, not unlike the one pictured here. It looks mighty scary from what I hear.
That is also the point where this story gets a bit odd. For bees are no danger in and of themselves, except for people with a specific allergy. We need not fear them in any way, individually, or as a swarm. I once saw a man cut up an octopus hanging from a branch, while a swarm of bees kept him company, close company. He did not get stung once. No, we should cherish the bees. After all, they are at the heart of a seriously scary hypothesis, which is becoming more and more of a tenable theory. Einstein, of course, already knew it, back in his day: “Mankind will not survive the honeybees’ disappearance for more than five years.”
