Looking at this I am reminded of a little church I once saw in Chili. The norther town of Arica contains an equally fine specimen of neo-gothic architecture. Churches in Arica repeatedly suffered onslaughts by nature, as if Pacha Mama herself was trying to convince these people to stick with her, instead of adopting the Man with the Plan as their number one deity. Despite earthquakes, subsequent tidal waves and more earthquakes, sadly, she failed. Modern man, represented in this case by none other than Gustav Eiffel, got the better of her.
Eiffel constructed, in France, a practically all metal church, that was packed and shipped to Arica in the form of an assembly kit. Over there it was put together in 1876 and has stood proud ever since, defying any onslaughts by Pacha Mama that might have passed, and I am sure she has tried a few times. The fact that it can be rebuild almost as easily as it collapses may have had something to do with that.
Anyhow, the thing has a very similar look to this building, the palace on Fiscal Island. I read that this should have been just a customhouse for monitoring trade by sea in Rio de Janeiro. However, after Pedro the Magnanimous experienced the magnificent view, he instructed architect Adolfo del Vecchio to build a little palace on the spot. This would be the place where Don Pedro II held what he didn’t know was his last great ball – approximately 4000 people attended, on that little island before you! – 6 days before he was overthrown in coup d’état nobody but a few power hungry military leaders really wanted.
Personally, I find this Neo-Gothicism quite lovely, for its choice of modest form, fine lining, soft colours and ditto decorative artwork. But seeing how God and the military entered its house, overthrowing Mother Earth and an actually good monarch, it seems a little tainted all of a sudden.
