Of course everybody needs a weakness. Most people have the garden-variety weakness, a cardinal sin or addiction to contend with. But what if you’re invulnerable like superman? It seems logical to invent something for him to be vulnerable to, but to me it would have been preferable if he’d had some flaw of character: ‘oops, in a fit of anger I melted down the combined Nato forces with my heat ray’, or ‘I know the Titanic is going down, but I just don’t feel up to saving anyone today’. But no, superman is just too solid for that, even too damn solid to have a sense of humour.
How I wish that his weakness was making snide remarks that genuinely hurt all the people around him: ‘Lois, that dress really makes your ass look like the alien blob I fought last week’, or ‘gee, dad, you’re the greatest. Oh wait, you’re just the guy that adopted me’. But no, superman is just destined to be the same two-dimensional character over and over again. That’s why they invented kryptonite, not so much to get rid of the man himself but rather to get rid of his enduring failure to make any impact whatsoever. You’d never see batman cringing over a lump of green coal, or wolverine for that matter. They’re real in a sense that superman never was. Kryptonite is just god’s way of saying that perfection is boring.
