The plane looks like it’s been built in someone’s tool-shed. It makes me think of the haphazard journey African refugees make across the Mediterranean in boats that are little more than oversized bathtubs. No one in their right mind would undertake a journey like that. The fact that so many of them wash up dead on Europe’s beaches proves that point, I guess. In the case of these refugees, there is desperation, there is fear, emotions so enormous and pressing you can hardly argue against them.
Alberto Santos-Dumont built this plane, and just looking at it makes me feel uncomfortable. To actually take place in it and try to fly it across a land you have physically been connected to all your life seems like a giant mental leap. Like the refugees, Alberto must’ve had something override his better judgement, although I doubt it was desperation or fear. Maybe it was a longing, a grand vision. I don’t know. The fact is, he got on the plane and he flew it. Just like sometimes the boats do come in.
