There was a time when we used to say that man was the measure of all things. Man being the pinnacle of creation and determining all things. Somewhere along the way this gradually shifted from man himself to his creations. These somehow became more important as we found ways to express the value of human life in a calculation; where I live the costs of infrastructural improvements are projected against the quantified cost in loss of human life.
Set against the background of high-rise and tenement buildings how can we possibly not feel redundant? The Twin Towers were worth more than the lives that were lost when they came crashing down. A city outweighs its inhabitants in value, a company’s worth is dependant on the total sum of its shares and not on the labour capacity of its employees and its assets. Man has become the lesser part of a greater equation; show me a city where the people are more important than the structures and it will surely be made of cardboard.
