From here to eternity, presuming that it is a notebook on her lap there. When it is said that (good) writers live forever because of their writing, this very literal interpretation is usually not what is meant. Which makes this sculpture, in my perception anyway, a rather humorous one. Edgar Duvivier has immortalised famous Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector in action so to speak. It’s almost as if he’s trying to say “Hey, look here, we sculptors also have a handle on eternity people, don’t you forget it” – not in an aggrieved manner, but with a playful wink at the revered and immortalizing art of writing.

By the same token, reality is also being rather whimsical around the sculpture, which was planted on this spot only a couple of months ago, the result of an initiative by Lispector’s biographer Teresa Montero. I have been told that ever since this has been a new photo hotspot for tourists in Rio. As if the people all wish to have a little part of this double portal to eternity. Of course they are a far cry from getting there, just breaking up their holiday inertia for a quick ride on Lispector’s boat. Behaviour somewhat akin to that of the people waiting for the ‘live-forever-pill’ I read about in this weekend’s newspaper.

And yes, I did do some web-research for this one. Mainly because Lispector, whom I had never heard of until now, intrigues me. What is written about her writing tickles the imagination and reading desires arise almost instantly Yet her work has to be located like a needle in a haystack. In Dutch that is. Luckily Lispector met with a very lively revival in Great Britain (see there you have it, that immortal streak) in 2015. So I can leave you now and start reading the collected short stories by Brazil’s very own female Kafka. Perhaps one day a photo will pop up out of my mailbox that will entice me to share that reading experience with you. Goodbye for now, I wish you well.
