Exactly one month ago I woke up to find that I had multiplied. Next to me in bed there lay a man and he looked vaguely like me. I sent him off to get groceries and made the sofa for him to sleep on. That night I went to sleep with a mild feeling of unease. People suddenly coming into existence in your bed, it’s enough to make you uneasy. The next morning, we were four. The day after that, there were eight people lying in my bedroom.
While at work that day I remembered an old story about a man who’s granted a wish by a king. He asks for a grain of rice, doubled for each square of a chessboard. The king is insulted at first; a grain of rice multiplied still seems like a small thing. He gives his consent. But when the king’s advisors do the math, they realize the man has been granted trillions of grains of rice, more than the whole world production.
That night I sneak into a stadium and sleep in the benches. Within ten days I have multiplied into more than a thousand people. They have been multiplied so often they don’t even look like me. In fifteen days more than thirty-two-thousand people surround me when I awake on the fresh green football field. “What do you people want”, I scream. “We, the people,” they say, “we, the people want you to stop goofing off and make something of your life.” I awake, bathed in sweat, alone.
