The hardest part is working above her head. Standing tiptoed, trying to keep the spray can steady. She doesn’t use a ladder anymore, though, since she broke her hip on the last fall. It narrows down the possibilities, and that frustrates her more than she wants to admit. No true artist wants to be limited. But these last few weeks things have started to change. Instead of feeling limited by the broader, flatter pieces she creates, she sees new shapes and vistas. She’s out on the streets every evening, creating her poetry, ignoring her own misgivings about pushing it too far. The whole town is her canvas and she hasn’t been caught yet.
As she’s about to start on the second layer, a car engine sounds in the distance. She only barely has time to drop the spray can in her shopping bag before a police car rounds the corner. It comes to a stop next to her and a police officer rolls down the side window. “Excuse me, ma’am, we got a report about some graphitising going on. You didn’t happen to see anyone?” “Sorry, officer, I was just passing by here myself. Must’ve scared them off.” “Alright, thank you, we’ll circle around, see if we can catch anyone. And ma’am, I’d advise you not to come here this time of day. It’s not that safe for elderly people alone.”
