The last time we went to the beach she suffered sunstroke and was violently ill in the evening. All night long I cooled her forehead with a washcloth while she thrashed and flailed about her. The beach was red, she said, satiated with the blood from people who, like overripe tomatoes, had burst. “Am I going to burst, too”, she asked. I pictured her exploding and gushing fountains of blood like in a cheap horror movie. “Probably not,” I said, “but let’s cool you down a little to make sure.” After a few hours she fell asleep and stayed in bed for fourteen hours. When she awoke she couldn’t remember a thing about the red beach she’d spoken off. But every time we pass the beach, she accelerates her pace. “I don’t like this place”, she says. “Let’s go to the next bay.”
