Last week I was in a room with ten of the most beautiful people in the world. Now, there was nothing that made them very different from you and me. In fact, I feel that I can safely say that these people would regard themselves as utterly normal, run of the mill people. Still, for me being in a room with these people, to me they were at that time the most beautiful people in the world.
You see, we were all there with a purpose. To tear down at least some of the walls that we’d built around us over the years. Walls that had protected us from sadness and from pain, walls that had helped us out big time! But at the same time those walls were keeping us from being who we wanted to be, people that could love, laugh and experience great joy. So we had to say goodbye to our walls, own up to the hurt that they had kept from us. And for doing just that, for embracing this great pain that they were unable to deal with earlier, these people were to me the most beautiful people in the world. They were emotional and spiritual giants, and they made me feel so secure, so wanted, that I could tear at those walls, too.
And now I stand here, and my life is so completely different from what it was that I can hardly begin to explain. I am open to the world, I am vulnerable, but I have never felt so strong and so alive. So here’s to you, everyone refusing to hide behind their walls. Here’s to you, trying to get across. I salute you and I applaud you, and I hope we will meet and look each other in the eye.
