and the tanks were left along the boulevards
in front of the cafés and night clubs
a reminder to all the weak hearted peace protesters

missile cruisers and destroyers rested
abandoned guns facing the waterfront
an angry captain had beached a submarine among the parasols

everybody said it could be war again anytime soon
while the kids climbed up and down armoured carriers
and jumped from decks to see how high
they could make the water splash
