Yes, yes, that is all very nice. Away with the concrete, hear hear for the palm trees. Away with the cars, in with the pedestrians. That’s what we call sustainable development, some healthy inner city planning. But, let’s stop to think here for a minute. For what did they do with the cars and vans and buses and trucks? Even though there are only two automobiles on it now, that freeway looks like it could carry hundreds of thousands of vehicles in all shapes and sizes. So the million dollar question is: where did all that traffic go? Underground? A few blocks inland? Did they, perhaps, actually design a sustainability plan around the Olympics that included a reduction in traffic? The new waterfront looks so nice, terrific actually. All that space, all that light. Friendly, inviting, safe, and so much better than the dominating and depressing concrete grey. But I can’t help but wonder to which urban area the fumes have now been diverted…
