It was the best of times, it was the worst of times – to be more exact, it was another New Year’s Eve – and every man and woman without a relationship flocked to the bars and nightclubs to find someone to belong to. Next year, if they succeeded, they could join the more sedate parties where the happy couples compared life goals and voyages past and future. This year however showed the usual eager and ageing singles dressed festively for the occasion, like presents waiting to be taken home and unwrapped.
At the Mocambo the dress code was black, and Karen’s friends had taken the little black dress to a next level of littleness. She figured that between their greater length and skimpier dresses, her own chances to meet someone had just about fallen below zero. Cheri and Bambi made their way to the dance floor, Karen walked over to the bar and ordered a martini. Behind the counter was a photo collage of a party. The by-line said ‘Happy 2016’. In one of the photos Bambi and Cheri flashed their breasts at the camera while Karen scowled in the background.
