Given enough time in the same spot, we will eventually grow roots. That sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Just your average standing in line at the supermarket remark. Nothing special.
The truth, however, is that nothing about growing roots is simple. Just like the process that makes trees draw nourishment from their surroundings and develop roots, the process of a person entering a community and finding his or her place is complex. We seek out new friends, jobs, form alignments, do volunteer work, form families, break up, and sometimes find fulfilment. And not just once! In our lifetime we move from place to place a smaller or larger amount of times.
Some people grow deeply attached to a place; become to others its epitome, its soul. Others keep moving, keep trying to find something to attach themselves to. Not everyone succeeds. There are people who are forced to flee their homes and attachments; maybe the sense of being uprooted is the saddest sense of all.
I think that everyone shares the same basic desire for a place to grow roots. We shouldn’t applaud those who succeeded, or berate those who haven’t. It’s not so much a matter of skill as a matter of luck and circumstance. Instead, think of those who are not so fortunate to have a place to grow roots. What a shame and what potential left untapped.
