Dutch singer Cornelis Vreeswijk once made a song about Rio de Janeiro, Samba de Maria (Cornelis Vreeswijk Samba de Maria 1972). In the song a man, the poorest man of the whole city, makes a living teaching people how to dance the Samba. Vreeswijk illustrates the lowly position of the man beautifully: “the poor here live high above the rich, I live on the highest peak”. The man meets his customers clandestinely in the evenings in abandoned places, which gives the song and the position of the man a beautiful duplicity. Is teaching people to dance the samba a metaphor for prostitution?
I have been in many cities and seen them be transformed come nightfall. The most beautiful parks, the friendliest streets, they turn to nightmarish places where you walk with your pounding heart resonating on your eardrums. I wonder how these docks change at night, and what happens in the dark. Maybe a poor man is there on the promenade, clapping a rhythm on two seashells for a young couple in love that desperately want to learn to dance.
