The singer screams, at an incredible pitch and volume, ‘Why ain’t open my third eye’, and repeats it and repeats it. I bang my head to the pulsating bass drone and double bass drum that lay the foundation for the guitars and the screaming. ‘Why ain't open my third eye.’ My hair is all around me. I see black army boots and Dr. Martins, lots of black jeans, torn, worn, the occasional long black skirt, everything sways to the rhythm and we all scream about our uncontrollably shut third eyes. Suddenly I think about my dad. No idea where that comes from, haven’t seen him in eight years (actually it will take me two more before I will, but I don’t know that now). I just think about him. About what he would think, say, if he could see me now, here. Next I step on a bottle and nearly keel over backwards, but strong hands keep me up, pat me on the back and onward we move. ‘Why ain’t open my third eye.’ Still, we would agree on one thing, if he were here. We would both be utterly bewildered by the fact that even this grunting mob of alternative rockers drinks that sweetened, watery piss that passes for beer. Back when we still drank a few together, we often wondered how it happened that exactly that worst of all Dutch beers got to be the most famous of all Dutch beers. Why, why all over the world, why??? See, that’s why we need that third eye open, to understand that which cannot be understood. And also, I may add, to perceive how a memory like that could end up, decades later, on a modern day Rio the Janeiro photographic still life. And, I guess, to fathom some other stuff that comes to pass in a human life.
