A man I once knew adhered to a Christian sub-branch based on some ancient German Jesus cult mixed with local and other imported (slave-trade, to be exact) influences. One day we were walking along a riverbed. The river had recently caused a flood, so the riverbed looked more like canyon. Also, it was cluttered with bits and pieces of houses and furniture, everything deconstructed by Mother Nature. I knew quite a few of the people who had lived in those houses, sat in those chairs, played with those toys, cooked in those pots, ate from those plates, drank from those cups. Grief for their loss gripped my heart tight when my companion suddenly asked, not ‘Do you believe in God’ but very specific: ‘Do you have a religion?’
I truthfully responded ‘No’.
Upon which he stated, quite matter-of-factly: ‘Then you should find one, soon.’
