We used to imagine that the gods lived on the mountaintops, probably because we couldn’t reach them there. I wonder, with our waning interest in gods and salvation, if any of the workmen or engineers who constructed this cable lift took time to look about and see if there were any deities around.
Maybe they just snuck off and made their way down to the jungles and deserts. Probably, some day, an explorer’s going to find them and report back to the civilized world. “I found the gods, they were hiding out in the trees.” “What’s a god? Is that some kind of native?”
Poor gods and poor men. So few places left for our unbridled imagination.
