The statue of Cristo Redentor is a place of pilgrimage. It’s true, I googled it. I notice that it annoys me, a modern-day construction being accorded such an important status. The next site of pilgrimage will probably be a skyscraper in Dubai, my cynical self says. And look at all those people making selfies, like Hi, I’m posing with Jesus. You see, my cynical self is my designated driver a lot of the time. And that’s not something I’m proud of.
But to me, a pilgrimage is about the self in relation to the world. It’s about stepping out into the world, away from the safety of your home, and experiencing what that does to your self. You make room for new insights; new lessons that might make you change your life. And I wonder, as you’re standing there, making pictures to take home or possibly circulate on the Internet immediately; what are you learning about yourself? What will you take home that will make your life, and the lives around you, change for the better? Are you even thinking about that? And why do I look down on that so much? Why can’t I reserve my judgement? I have very much to learn, myself.
